Ethiopia’s First National Innovation Forum Strengthens Collaboration to Bridge the ‘Valley of Death’ in Research and Innovation Commercialization

The First National Innovation Forum (NIF 2026), held under the theme “Bridging the Valley of Death: Connecting Research, Innovation, and Market Opportunities,” officially opened at the Industrial Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hub (IIEH) of Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU), bringing together policymakers, innovators, investors, academics, development partners, and private sector leaders from across Ethiopia.

Jointly organized by the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) and Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU), the two-day forum aims to strengthen Ethiopia’s innovation ecosystem and accelerate the commercialization of research outputs and startup innovations.

The opening ceremony featured welcoming remarks by Dr. Abreham Debebe, Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer at AASTU, followed by an opening address by Dr. Hassen Hussen, Chief Executive Officer of EDI. In his remarks, Dr. Hassen emphasized the critical role of skills development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in driving economic transformation and creating sustainable employment opportunities.

Speakers at the opening session underscored the importance of aligning education, research, and industry needs to develop a workforce capable of transforming ideas into market-ready solutions. They also highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among government institutions, universities, industry actors, investors, and development partners to build a resilient and inclusive innovation ecosystem.

A keynote presentation provided participants with an overview of the opportunities and challenges shaping the country’s innovation landscape. The presentation explored key issues, including access to finance, intellectual property protection, technology transfer, commercialization barriers, and regulatory frameworks, while also highlighting emerging opportunities in fintech, agritech, manufacturing, digital technologies, and green energy.

The forum focused on policy and financing under the theme “Breaking the Valley of Death: Financing University Innovation Ecosystems.” High-level panel discussions brought together representatives from the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Authority, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Ministry of Education, African Union, Entrepreneurship Development Institute, and innovation ecosystem leaders to explore strategies for financing university-based innovations and strengthening technology transfer mechanisms.

Another key session examined Fintech, Regulatory Sandboxes, and Innovation Scale-Ups, featuring experts from the National Bank of Ethiopia, Ministry of Innovation and Technology, leading fintech firms, and technology innovators. Discussions centered on creating enabling regulatory environments, expanding venture capital and alternative financing opportunities, and accelerating the growth and commercialization of innovative startups

A major highlight of the forum is the innovation exhibition, which showcases pioneering startups and enterprises operating in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, green energy, fintech, and artificial intelligence. More than ten innovative enterprises are exhibiting their products, technologies, and solutions to government officials, investors, development partners, and the wider public.

As Ethiopia advances its ambition to build a knowledge-driven and innovation-led economy, the First National Innovation Forum is expected to serve as a landmark platform for fostering collaboration, informing policy dialogue, mobilizing investment, and creating pathways for innovators and entrepreneurs to transform research and ideas into impactful businesses and sustainable economic opportunities.
