EDI and IPDC Sign MoU to Accelerate Startups and SMEs in Ethiopia

The Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) and the Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IPDC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on August 4, 2026, at the IPDC Headquarters in Addis Ababa to accelerate high-impact startups and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across Ethiopia.

The agreement, signed by EDI Chief Executive Officer Dr. Hassan Hussein and IPDC Deputy CEO of Operations and Park Management Mr. Fitsum Ketema, establishes a formal framework to pool specialized resources, physical infrastructure, and technical expertise to strengthen the national innovation ecosystem.

Under the partnership, EDI will deliver a structured pipeline encompassing entrepreneurship training, business incubation, acceleration, mentorship, and comprehensive enterprise support programs. In turn, IPDC will open up vital infrastructure offering selected high-potential startups and SMEs access to manufacturing spaces, working facilities, Special Economic Zones (SEZs), and logistics support across its nationwide network of industrial parks.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Fitsum Ketema highlighted the growing strength of local enterprise, noting that domestic investor participation in IPDC-managed industrial parks and special economic zones has reached 72 percent. He emphasized that partnering with EDI will fast-track sustainable enterprise creation and expansion, empower innovative business models, and maximize the economic contribution of local manufacturers.

EDI CEO Dr. Hassan Hussein reaffirmed the alignment between both institutions, noting that combining EDI’s capacity-building framework with IPDC’s physical infrastructure directly addresses core bottlenecks facing homegrown ventures moving them efficiently from initial product development stages to full commercial scale-up. Beyond immediate operational support, the multi-year initiative aims to build a robust pipeline capable of nurturing Ethiopia’s first generation of unicorn startups high-growth, technology-driven, or market-creating enterprises scaling to global competitiveness.

To achieve these goals, EDI and IPDC will co-host national startup expos, innovation fairs, and policy dialogues to mobilize investment and advance evidence-based industrial policy.

By bridging the gap between talent development and industrial infrastructure, this collaboration sets a practical blueprint for unlocking national economic dynamism and driving sustainable industrialization across Ethiopia.
