ADDIS ABABA — The Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) officially launched iDisruptHub on May 18, 2026, establishing a premier incubation and acceleration platform designed to anchor the nation’s growing innovation ecosystem and fast-track high-potential startups. The new initiative aims to transition homegrown ideas into scalable, market-ready ventures to drive job creation and broader economic transformation across Ethiopia.
Built in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation through the SEED program, the hub is uniquely designed to serve as a blueprint for institutional development. A core objective of iDisruptHub is to function as a model incubation space that TVTs can mimic and replicate when setting up their own localized entrepreneurship incubation centers.
Speaking at the inauguration, Muferihat Kamil, Minister of Labor and Skills, emphasized that the platform arrives at a critical juncture for the country's economy. She highlighted that Ethiopia's evolving and supportive policy frameworks are playing a pivotal role in unlocking entrepreneurial potential and fostering a culture of robust innovation.
Distinct from traditional accelerators, iDisruptHub differentiates itself by functioning as a hub of hubs. It serves as a unifying umbrella that connects fragmented local ecosystems into a collaborative network. Furthermore, the platform acts as a critical policy-to-practice bridge, translating national economic strategies into actionable, real-world opportunities for entrepreneurs while offering unique, behavioral-driven support tailored to the mindset and habits of founders.
To solve the scalability challenges that long-standing startups have faced, the platform is engineered to support ventures across every phase of their growth lifecycle. It offers specialized tracks for incubation, seed funding, and venture acceleration. Beyond traditional mentorship, iDisruptHub introduces practical mechanisms to ensure commercial viability, providing startups with direct market linkages, targeted investment matchmaking, and real-world testing opportunities facilitated through a dedicated procurement sandbox.
EDI Chief Executive Officer, Hassan Hussein (PhD), noted that the launch represents the culmination of sustained, multi-year efforts by the institute to enable the nation’s workforce, with a specific focus on young people. He stated that the initiative builds on years of effort to support entrepreneurs by removing barriers and enabling them to turn ideas into impactful businesses.
By bridging critical gaps in finance, market access, and infrastructure, EDI’s new hub is positioned to serve as a catalyst for sustainable economic growth, positioning Ethiopia as a rising center for business innovation in Africa.
