The Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI), in collaboration with the Oromia Job Creation and Vocational Bureau, successfully concluded a three-day intensive workshop titled "Entrepreneurial Media & Startup Ecosystem Lab: A Design-Driven Workshop for Media and Communication Professionals," held from March 2–4, 2026, in Bishoftu.
The program convened thirty-five media and communication professionals from the region including TV and radio journalists, digital content creators, and editors to revolutionize how innovation and entrepreneurship are reported in Ethiopia.
The lab was designed to transcend reporting by equipping participants with a Value & Impact-Driven Storytelling framework. Moving beyond technical reporting, journalists were encouraged to uncover the human journeys behind every startup. The training emphasized a critical paradigm shift: moving from reporting on products to highlighting people, and from listing technical features to showcasing life-changing transformations.
To bridge theory with practice, the program’s second day featured Story Capture Missions to key innovation hubs, including the Ministry of Labor and Skills (MOLS) PSI-Lab, EDI’s headquarters, and the sites of successful entrepreneurs.
These field visits allowed participants to interview founders directly, capturing the raw struggles and local pride that define the entrepreneurial journey. The experience was further enriched by a Story Night" session, where guest entrepreneurs and digital influencers shared candid accounts of building startups within the current economic landscape.
A central pillar of the workshop was the strengthening of Ethical Storytelling within the sector. In an era of increasing digital sensationalism, participants pledged to maintain journalistic integrity by verifying impact data and portraying entrepreneurs with dignity and accuracy.
The program culminated in a high-energy Prototyping Sprint, where participants developed a Media Activation Roadmap. This strategic plan is specifically designed to promote upcoming startup competitions, ensuring these events gain maximum visibility across regional and national platforms.
In his closing remarks, the CEO of EDI, Dr. Hassan Hussein, emphasized that a startup’s success is deeply tied to the narrative built around it. Equipped with advanced skills in business journalism and multimedia storytelling, these media professionals are now prepared to ensure that the innovations solving Ethiopia’s most pressing challenges receive the spotlight and public trust they deserve.
