Strengthening Regional Recovery: EDI and GIZ Graduate 75 MSMEs across Tigray, Unlocking Direct Access to Capital

MEKELLE, ETHIOPIA | August 17, 2026 — The Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI), in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), concluded a series of graduation and business pitching ceremonies across Tigray, celebrating 75 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Wukro, Maichew, and Mekelle. Across all three towns, 37 of the 75 graduating entrepreneurs (nearly 50%) are women—highlighting EDI’s strategic commitment to inclusive economic recovery and support for women-led enterprises. The ceremonies featured live pitching sessions connecting loan-ready entrepreneurs directly with major banking institutions, positioning them to leverage regional reconstruction efforts.

Implemented under the Ethio-German Private Sector Development (PSDE) Programme, the intensive six-month SME Loop training and coaching curriculum equipped participants with essential capabilities in modern business management, financial literacy, digitalization, and market-expansion strategies. By transitioning informal operations into structured, investment-ready enterprises, the initiative provided business owners with standardized Business Model Canvases, formal financial management systems, and digital record-keeping tools.

Presiding over the ceremonies across the region, EDI representatives and key government officials highlighted the transformative impact of the program:

In Wukro (Aug 11): Mayor Gebremichael Gebremedhin commended EDI and GIZ, stating, "This program has breathed new life into our local economy. The dedication shown by these entrepreneurs is a testament to the resilience of our people."

In Maichew (Aug 13): Vice Mayor and Head of the Economic Sector, Mr. Tigabu Gebrekidan, urged graduates to embrace their role as job creators: "Your journey does not end here. You must now become employers, not just employees. Create opportunities for youth."

In Mekelle (Aug 15): Mr. Alem Aregawi, Vice Head of the Tigray Regional Bureau of TVT and Job Creation, emphasized the role of MSMEs in long-term stability, encouraging graduates to serve as beacons of inspiration across their communities.

Haftu Haile, Acting Regional Coordinator of the EDI-Tigray Regional Office, commended the graduates' adaptability throughout the series: "These SMEs have demonstrated that resilience and innovation can flourish even in the most difficult circumstances. Their ability to adapt and grow is a powerful example of entrepreneurship driving regional recovery."

A central pillar of the graduation series was the live pitching sessions, where entrepreneurs presented finalized expansion strategies directly to partner financial institutions. This strategic mechanism directly aligns with the newly launched €31 million financing initiative funded by the European Union (EU) and KfW, and administered through the Development Bank of Ethiopia (DBE). Designed to offer affordable, low-interest debt capital to MSMEs in conflict-affected regions, the facility ensures that newly structured EDI graduates can immediately secure scaling capital.

The completion of these 75 enterprises across Wukro, Maichew, and Mekelle builds upon the January 2026 first cohort of 120 MSMEs previously trained across Adigrat, Wukro, Mekelle, Mekoni, and Maichew. EDI extends its sincere appreciation to GIZ, the European Union, KfW, the Development Bank of Ethiopia, and regional municipal leadership for their strong partnership. Through these synchronized efforts across the public, private, and development sectors, the SME Loop program continues to establish a sustainable, private-sector-led framework for economic growth throughout Ethiopia.
