In Central Ethiopia Region, Wolkite Polytechnic College is no longer just a place of learning; it has become a dynamic hub of innovation and economic empowerment. Driven by the SEED program, led by EDI in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, the college is rewriting the playbook for technical and vocational education.
The remarkable success of this program is perhaps best captured by the words of the college's own leader. Hairu Ahmed Shifa, the Dean of Wolkite Polytechnic, describes the SEED program with profound reverence. "The SEED program is a remedy," he states. "It has been instrumental in healing the challenges of the TVET sector by providing an entrepreneurial mindset.
The results of this entrepreneurial focus are nothing short of extraordinary. The program has provided essential entrepreneurship training to students, with a special emphasis on creating opportunities for people with disabilities. This inclusive approach ensures that no one is left behind in the journey toward economic independence.
The most recent graduating class stands as evidence of the program's effectiveness. An astounding 95% of the graduates have been successfully linked to jobs.
The college is also demonstrating its commitment to building a sustainable future. It has launched a new incubation center, which has already led to the registration of 10 new technologies and the establishment of six fully operational enterprises in diverse sectors such as farming, construction, and beekeeping.
This entrepreneurial spirit is not just about the students; it’s about the institution itself. Wolkite Polytechnic College now covers more than 30% of its operating costs through these internal income-generating activities. This financial independence marks a significant milestone on their ambitious path to becoming a fully self-sufficient institution within the next 7-10 years.
The success at Wolkite Polytechnic College is a powerful model for TVET institutions, proving that with the right resources and a bold vision, education can become the engine of innovation for the nation.
