Ethiopian Overseas Employment Agencies Requested to Level Up for Global Competition!

In a significant call to action, overseas employment agencies across Ethiopia have been requested to elevate their standards and strategically prepare for the demands of the global labor market. This imperative came at the conclusion of a two-day workshop, "Sustainable Entrepreneurship in Overseas Employment," successfully hosted by the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI).

The impactful event, which saw the participation of over 800 owners and operators of overseas employment agencies, is being hailed as a crucial step towards fortifying the sector through enhanced innovation and the adoption of sustainable business practices.

Her Excellency Muferihat Kamil, Minister of Labor and Skills, who graced the workshop with her presence, candidly acknowledged the enduring challenges within the overseas employment sector. She highlighted the critical need for robust collaboration among all stakeholders, emphasizing that overcoming existing hurdles requires coordinated efforts between the Ministry and employment agencies. The Minister extended her sincere gratitude to EDI for coordinating the workshop, recognizing its invaluable role in advancing open dialogue and bolstering capacity within the sector.

Hassen Hussien(PhD) CEO of EDI, delivered a powerful message to the participating agencies, urging them to cultivate a cooperative mindset and transcend what he termed "unhealthy competition." "You need to work together, get out of the competition, and create the capacity to discuss your problems openly and collectively,” Dr. Hassen stated, highlighting the paramount importance of unity and innovation for ensuring the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the sector. He further stressed the immense potential of the overseas employment sector and the workshop’s pivotal role in equipping agencies to meet evolving international standards.

Throughout the workshop, participants actively engaged in constructive discussions on pressing issues confronting the sector, including regulatory complexities, coordination challenges, and institutional limitations. Attendees widely reported that the workshop provided much-needed clarity on these challenges and significantly contributed to raising a stronger, more collaborative relationship with the Ministry. Many expressed profound appreciation to EDI for organizing the timely event and advocated for the implementation of similar initiatives in the future to support continuous improvement and shared growth.

This landmark workshop is widely regarded as a vital stride towards cultivating a more collaborative, sustainable, and globally competitive overseas employment sector, poised to better serve both Ethiopian job seekers and international labor markets.
