Strengthening Entrepreneurial Capacity in Ethiopia's Public Health Research Sector: EDI and AHRI Collaborate to Build Innovation Ecosystem

The Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI), in collaboration with the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI), has launched an institutional transformation initiative aimed at converting scientific excellence into commercializable, real-world health technologies.

The initiative focuses on embedding public entrepreneurship and innovation systems directly into the management and operational frameworks of Ethiopia's public health research sector.

Through a highly specialized Public Entrepreneurship and Innovation Ecosystem Building (PEIEB) executive workshop program, the two institutions targeted institutional challenges previously identified in innovation governance, commercialization pathways, and ecosystem collaboration. The initiative comes as Ethiopia accelerates its national development agenda, which increasingly relies on knowledge-driven growth and innovation-led competitiveness to boost its global economic standing.

The joint initiative yielded immediate, concrete outputs designed to modernize how health research is utilized in the country. Using hands-on Design Thinking methodologies, the collaborative teams developed distinct innovation solution concepts specifically engineered to address current institutional bottlenecks at AHRI.

Additionally, the program generated a comprehensive framework of ecosystem-building recommendations that spans institutional pillars. These structural blueprints outline how the research institute will manage innovation governance, foster continuous institutional learning, and build strategic networks connecting government, industry, academia, and private investors. Participants also formulated individualized goals, on-the-job implementation blueprints, and personal competency development plans to ensure the practical execution of these frameworks.

The foundational architecture of the training program was informed by a rigorous Innovation Readiness Assessment conducted by EDI at AHRI prior to the launch. This diagnostic phase ensured that the curriculum directly addressed the real-world operational realities, research translation barriers, and asset utilization pathways unique to the biomedical research sector.
