A critical "Public Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Ecosystem Building Training" for executive leaders of the Southern Ethiopia Regional State has successfully concluded in Arba Minch, held from June 2-4, 2025. This intensive program, a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Labour and Skills and the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI), aimed to instill a culture of innovation and entrepreneurial thinking within public service.
Her Excellency Muferihat Kamil, Minister of Labour and Skills, emphasized the profound importance of Entrepreneurship and Innovation ecosystem building for the nation's holistic development. During her address, she highlighted the critical need for regional leaders to identify local strengths, foster collective efforts, and forge a shared vision. The Minister stated that "entrepreneurship development and innovation awareness are crucial to effectively fulfill public trust and government mission." She further elaborated on key areas including job creation, skill development, industrial growth, technology-led market development, institution building, and creating enabling environments.
His Excellency Tilahun Kebede, President of the Southern Ethiopia Regional State, hailed the training as a "game changer." He acknowledged the region's existing strengths and highlighted the training as an invaluable opportunity to proactively address challenges. Ato Tilahun stressed the importance of shifting perspectives and leveraging time and capacity for effective action.
Hassan Hussein (PhD), CEO of the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI), noted Ethiopia's impressive eighth-place ranking in the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) last year, attributing a significant portion of this success to EDI's contributions. He advised leaders to meticulously examine internal capacities, maintain sharp focus, and enhance cooperation to achieve outstanding results in the sector.
Participants of the training expressed profound appreciation, stating that the program provided fresh insights. They noted that it empowered them to build greater capacity, not merely by continuing existing practices but by actively seeking new discoveries. The training, enriched by a blend of theory, practical experience, and scientific approaches, also inspired leaders to deeply analyze their contexts and leverage opportunities effectively.
More than 300 regional leaders participated in this landmark training, setting a new precedent for public sector engagement with entrepreneurial development and innovation in Southern Ethiopia.
