Mahlet “Mafi” Afework Shares Her Global Fashion Journey at EDI Story Night

Renowned Ethiopian fashion designer and entrepreneur Mahlet Afework, widely known as Mafi, shared her inspiring personal and professional journey during an engaging EDI Story Night session, offering powerful insights into creativity, resilience, and global ambition.

Mahlet Afework is the CEO and Creative Director of Mafi Mafi Fashion Design & Manufacturing, as well as the Founder of the Mafi Fashion Academy and Lab. Since its establishment in 2011, Mafi Mafi has emerged as a leading Ethiopian fashion brand, redefining the industry through innovation, cultural storytelling, and a growing international presence.

During the conversation, Afework reflected on key themes including the founding of Mafi Mafi, breaking into international markets, managing production and distribution across regions, brand positioning, and the evolving Ethiopian fashion industry. She also spoke candidly about challenges, resilience, recognition, and the role of the Mafi Fashion Lab in nurturing emerging talent.

Founded as a fashion brand with a strong social enterprise mission, Mafi Mafi incorporates traditional Ethiopian fabrics and weaving techniques into contemporary, empowering designs. The brand works closely with skilled female weavers across Ethiopia, creating sustainable employment opportunities while elevating local craftsmanship to global platforms.

Mahlet journey into fashion is unconventional and deeply personal. After early experiences in modeling and music, she turned to fashion design, largely self-taught through online resources such as Google and YouTube. Raised in Addis Ababa, she opened her flagship boutique in 2011 and quickly gained recognition for her distinctive fusion of traditional textiles and modern silhouettes.

Her designs have since attracted both local and international acclaim. Mahlet has received several prestigious awards, including the Creative Futures Award (2017), Origin Africa Design Award at African Fashion Week New York (2012), and Designer of the Year at European Fashion Day (2010). She was also profiled by Forbes Africa, which named her one of Africa’s most exciting emerging designers in 2015.

Beyond accolades Mahlet’s story is one of perseverance. Raised as the youngest of five children, she assumed responsibility at a young age following family hardship. She began working at 16 and built her career through determination, creativity, and self-belief—experiences that continue to shape her leadership and vision.

Today, Mahlet Afework is recognized as a trailblazer in Ethiopian fashion, admired for transforming heritage into contemporary global narratives. At EDI Story Night, her story served as a powerful reminder that innovation rooted in culture, combined with resilience and purpose, can create impact far beyond borders.
