Empowering MSMEs and Startups Through High-Quality Business Support

The Business Development Services (BDS) Program is one of the flagship initiatives of the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI). It is designed to strengthen Ethiopia’s entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem by enhancing the delivery and quality of business support services for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), startups, corporates, and public/private institutions.

Focus Areas

Internal Capacity Building

At the heart of the BDS Program is the ongoing development of EDI’s own internal capacity: ensuring that its BDS Advisors, Technical Staff, and Mentors are equipped to deliver impactful and context-specific business advisory services across sectors. Through intensive BDS Advisory Training and practical learning, EDI professionals are equipped to provide evidence-based, high-quality advisory services tailored to the needs of individuals, MSMEs, institutions, and corporates. This ensures EDI’s ability to deliver consistent, result-oriented support across sectors.

Key Areas of Focus
  • Enhancing the technical, strategic, and interpersonal competencies of EDI BDS Advisors
  • Strengthening the ability to diagnose enterprise challenges and co-design tailored solutions
  • Building sector-specific expertise to better serve individuals, institutions, and corporates
  • Introducing modern tools, frameworks, and methodologies in business development service delivery
  • Promoting a learning culture within EDI through regular capacity building, peer learning, and mentorship

Empowering MSMEs, Startups, and Institutions

The BDS Program builds the capacity of entrepreneurs, enterprises, and institutions to manage and grow sustainable businesses. The approach is not about one-off interventions but about developing long-term competencies that enhance resilience and adaptability in an ever-changing economic environment. Through empowering both businesses and the institutions that support them, EDI ensures a more dynamic and effective ecosystem capable of driving innovation, efficiency, and sustained growth.

The BDS Program focuses on strengthening MSMEs and startups, while also emphasizing the transformation of key supporting institutions, such as entrepreneurship support organizations, public sector entities, corporates, and other organizations that require growth and transformation. These institutions, though not necessarily focused solely on entrepreneurship, play a critical role in fostering an ecosystem that supports the development of businesses and the broader economy.

Certification of BDS Providers

EDI develops national standards and guidelines for delivering BDS. These frameworks ensure that service delivery is consistent, effective, and aligned with international best practices to ensure alignment with national economic growth policy. The standards guide methodology, ethics, quality control, and client outcomes.

  • Competency-based evaluations
  • Structured and Standardized Training-of-Advisors (ToA) pathways for BDS Providers
  • Tiered certification levels (e.g., Basic, Certified, Senior BDS Provider)
