The Business Development Services (BDS) Program is one of the flagship initiatives of the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI). It is designed to strengthen Ethiopia’s entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem by enhancing the delivery and quality of business support services for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), startups, corporates, and public/private institutions.
At the heart of the BDS Program is the ongoing development of EDI’s own internal capacity: ensuring that its BDS Advisors, Technical Staff, and Mentors are equipped to deliver impactful and context-specific business advisory services across sectors. Through intensive BDS Advisory Training and practical learning, EDI professionals are equipped to provide evidence-based, high-quality advisory services tailored to the needs of individuals, MSMEs, institutions, and corporates. This ensures EDI’s ability to deliver consistent, result-oriented support across sectors.
The BDS Program builds the capacity of entrepreneurs, enterprises, and institutions to manage and grow sustainable businesses. The approach is not about one-off interventions but about developing long-term competencies that enhance resilience and adaptability in an ever-changing economic environment. Through empowering both businesses and the institutions that support them, EDI ensures a more dynamic and effective ecosystem capable of driving innovation, efficiency, and sustained growth.
The BDS Program focuses on strengthening MSMEs and startups, while also emphasizing the transformation of key supporting institutions, such as entrepreneurship support organizations, public sector entities, corporates, and other organizations that require growth and transformation. These institutions, though not necessarily focused solely on entrepreneurship, play a critical role in fostering an ecosystem that supports the development of businesses and the broader economy.
One of the key components of the BDS Program is strengthening the capacity of MSMEs and startups to effectively engage with financial institutions and compete in local, regional, and international markets. Through targeted capacity building, the BDS Program empowers MSMEs to enhance their ability to access finance, penetrate new markets, and capitalize on growth opportunities.
The BDS Program focuses on strengthening the innovation capacity of MSMEs and startups to help them remain competitive and future-ready in an increasingly digital and fast-evolving business landscape.
To ensure quality, professionalism, and credibility in business development services nationwide, EDI is spearheading efforts in the following areas:
